BREEDING/ BREEDERS
Bitches may start their heat cycle at 6 months of age or older. This first time if it falls within less than 2 years and the bitch hasn't had their hip evaluation, she souldn't be bred. Althought she might seem to be mature enought this is not the same in reality with her mind nor her full body development.
It's not ever recomended to breed a bitch nor a male if the radiographic evaluations for hips and elbows haven't been previously done.
The Breeder has to be a very responsible person and be aware of the time and effort breeding and raising of dogs require. A breeder should be comitted in all aspects to this responsability. Bitches require lots of attention, care, pampering and special nutrition. He should always be aware about the unexpected situations that can an do happen!!
A good reliable breeder will always be present even after the sale is done. Puppies should always be evaluated and temperament tested by a proffessional, this way the selection of the puppy goes in accordance to the style of life the new owner has.
The puppy should be vaccinated and dewormed at least twice at 8 weeks of age. A complete information package should be delivered were as all the information pertaining to the puppy.
Contracts should be signed by both parties and either AKC and/or FCI papers should be delivered. In teh event this is not possible a copy of the papers in process should be available for inspection

OUR BREEDING PROGRAM
We use mainly Volhard puppy testing methods, eventho we have found some of his tests are imited we carry on different testing techiniques depending on the litters we are testing. I always use puppy character assessment when selecting the pups from a litter , however, I only puppy test litters that I have not had the oportunity of watching grow up on a daily basis. Pups I breed at home are continously puppy tested because I know their personal characters so well that I don't need to test them. The pups born in our kennels are always subjected to puppy testing. Usually a litter that is born in Southernwind is observed everyday of his time while being raised inside out home, we see who is the toughest one, the one that finds the mother faster, the most aggressive one and the most patient one, we carry on small tests since they are born, we handle them everyday and wake up their senses.

When Volhard assesses a puppy it's grade's are based simply on the behaviour that it's observed when restraining a puppy for 30 seconds it struggles continuously and attempts to bite the hand that is restraining it. In this example she would give the puppy a grade of 1 (1 being very dominant to 6 being submissive).

Where I feel that Volhard system is weak is that at no time does it look deeper than the inmediate displayed behaviour. I believe that what is far more important in assessing the pups character is to determine what is motivating the behaviour.
In other words, if the pup is behaving that way because it is in a state of terror and is fighting & struggling through fear, that is not the same behaviour as the puppy that is struggling out of doggy determination to be free because it simply refuses to be restrained..
As said before the tests we conduct are observation, providing opportunities for traits to express themselves. The first awakening senses are the vital for survival, that being touch and heat and pressure and scent . All important in locating mother. We test for pack strength,
Some things can not be tested for in the whelping pen because they require age and maturity .
We watch for intelligent choices, watch for determination .
We will not allow every one to come test and pin the pups down . Everiting we do with them is to promote them to have a winning attitude in life! This is like the race horse, teach them that winning attitude...I'm the best! Discipline should be imparted with love and understanding!
